MEET  TEAM   hi-5

Picture
An unlikely team. An unexpected journey. Discover us individually and how we came together to create the SoundCrystal, the third iteration of our project idea.

From   the   begiNning

Where   we   are   now

Originally, we were four mechanical engineers and one software guru, but we all wanted to try what we didn't know how to do. Our mindset was not use our current skills to achieve maximum potential, but rather, learn as much as possible and get out of our comfort zone.
We have learn an incredible amount through this project. We became much closer as a team and as friends. We spent countless hours designing, ideating, fabricating, integrating and troubleshooting this complex system. And we came out stronger, smarter and with much more experience that we thought possible.

I have always enjoyed sketching and designing things using CAD so this project was a great way to work on my design and mechanical skills. While working on the housing for each sprint, I tried to work on other subsystems, mainly software. I have relatively enough experience to know what to do, but I wanted to improve those skills as well. During the ideation phase of the project, I was open to whatever project we chose, as long as everyone was passionate about it. Our project would not be what it is today without the contribution of all team members. After spending countless hours and pulling a couple of all nighters, I was very happy with the dope and aesthetic masterpiece we call the SoundCrystal.

Ilya Besancon - Olin Class of 2020; Engineering:Design

I've always been very passionate and interested in Mechanical Engineering, even if my major is with a focus in design. That said, I really wanted to push out of my comfort zone and learn as much as possible in this project. As a musician and someone who loves cool projects, I was very excited to work on the LEDs and find a way to create live beat detection. There were countless issues and iterations I had to go through, but it was totally worth it! I'm very thankful for my wonderful teammates, and the valuable experience I've gained through this project. I'm planning on modifying the lights in my room using the circuit I designed to recreate a similar experience.

Liz Leadley - Olin Class of 2020; Engineering: Robotics

I'm a bit of a dabbler, with a generally mechanical bend to my experience. So, naturally, I immediately jumped into software and electrical of the first few JuCube iterations; doing something I know would be too normal. I enjoyed switching between subsystems each sprint, making sure I gained some understanding in each area. The whole team was always ready to share their knowledge, so I ended up learning quite a lot during our short project.

Sophia Nielsen - Olin Class of 2020; Engineering: Robotics

I'm a Robotics Engineer so I enjoy integrating and working in electrical, software, and mechanical systems. This project, I pushed myself to work on mechanical design, a skill that I had little to no experience in before this semester. I love music so this project was all about bringing it together with my love of engineering. I really enjoyed working on this project and this awesome team is what made it all happened. I have a backwards tooth and the ability to enjoy any movie even if it's actually terrible.

Miranda Lao - Olin Class of 2020; Engineering: Math

I enjoyed every aspect of this project (mechanical, electrical, software) so much that I decided to major in something that wasn't any of them (but was found in all of them). System integration is also really interesting, and the experience I got from this project was invaluable. Massive shout-out to my amazing teammates for making it all happen.
All awesome people! <3
