We're making an automatic scarf printer!

In this project, we intend to create a programmable knitting machine similar to flatbed knitting machines commercially-made for home use.  Flat bed machines tend to have a row of needles constrained by slots and a yarn carriage that can move back and forth over the needle bed. Within the carriage is a linear cam that controls the motion of the needles.  As the carriage passes over the needle bed, the cam followers on the needles are pushed by the linear cam .  As the motion of the needles is constrained to a single degree of freedom by the needle bed slots, all needle motion can be controlled by a single motor (via the linear cam). This makes actuation and control of knitting to be much simpler to replicate than the automation of traditional hand knitting. To see a commercially-made flatbed knitting machine in action, check out this video.
